Teams Direct Routing

Direct Routing is a highly configurable method of deploying Microsoft Teams. Many large enterprises elect Direct Routing in order to maintain flexibility and integrate their various applications and routing requirements into Microsoft Teams. This option may be right for you if:

  • With the Phone System, you want to use Teams.

  • You need to retain your current PSTN carrier.

  • There should be a mix of routing, with some calls going through Calling Plan and others through your carrier.

  • Third-party PBXs and equipment such as overhead pagers, analog devices, and so on must be interoperable with your system.

Direct routing enables a number of configuration options. These include:

  • Enabling your own supported Session Border Controller (SBC) without the need for additional on-premises software.

  • Almost any telephony carrier can be used with Direct Routing

  • In some cases, your carrier or partner can configure and manage this option for you (ask if your carrier or partner offers this service).

  • You can configure interoperability between your telephony equipment

In order to deploy this option as your organization's phone system you will need:

  • Uninterrupted connection to Microsoft 365. (unless you configure a failover option)

  • Deploying and maintaining a supported SBC.

  • A contract with a third-party carrier.
